How I Managed Money As a Teenager

Looking back, I realize that the way I handled money as a teenager shaped how I view finances today. Some lessons were intentional, others were tough, but they all stuck with me. I don’t claim to be a master, but here’s what I learned:

1️⃣ Tithing First, Always – From a young age, I knew that 10% belonged to God. No matter how much (or little) I made, that portion was non-negotiable. My mom always said, if you can be faithful with the little, you sure can be faithful with abundance. I hold that true to this day and I have experienced great blessings.
2️⃣ Save What You Can – I made it a habit to put money aside, even if it was just a small amount. Whether it was for a big purchase or just for a rainy day, saving was always part of the plan. I didn’t know much about investing back then, but i believe if I combined saving and investing, I would have reaped a good harvest in my 40s and beyond.
3️⃣ Give Where You Can – No one told me to, but I made sure to contribute to my family. Every pay period, I’d buy groceries—not because I had to, but because it was the right thing to do. I figured since I live and eat here, might as well chip in. It was a gesture my mom appreciated a lot. Giving to charity is also option. Giving is a rewarding practice and leaves you feeling empowered.
4️⃣ Work for What You Want – I had my eye on a trendy pair of shoes, but they cost almost 80% of my paycheck. Instead of blowing it all at once, I saved for months until I could buy them outright. That moment was so rewarding! They spent the night with me in bed the day I got them..ha!
5️⃣ Not Everyone Deserves Access – After only wearing the shoes twice, a friend asked to borrow them for a photoshoot. That was the last time I saw them. Lesson learned: Not everyone who smiles at you has your best interest at heart.
Money management isn’t just about numbers—it’s about values, priorities, and the lessons that stick with us for a long time. Financial literacy learnt early is a game changer. Invest your time learning about budgeting, investing, savings and financial planning. It’s the key to FINANCIAL FREEDOM!
How did you manage your money as a teenager? Which of the above points stands out for you? Please share.
